How to Become a Tiler in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a tiler — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£26,000 - 38,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed tilers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling, or equivalent City & Guilds. No mandatory licence but NVQ is expected for commercial work.

Training Route

2-3 year apprenticeship or intensive course (1-4 weeks for basics). Tiling is one of the more accessible trades to enter as a career changer. However, high-end tiling (large format, natural stone, wet rooms) requires significant experience. Most tilers are self-employed.

A Day in the Life

Survey the room and plan the tile layout. Prepare surfaces - tanking wet areas, levelling floors, priming walls. Cut tiles with a wet cutter or manual cutter. Apply adhesive and lay tiles with spacers. Grout and seal. Attention to detail is everything - one tile out of line ruins the entire job.
