How to Become a Roofer in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a roofer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£27,000 - 40,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed roofers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roofing (Slating & Tiling, Sheeting & Cladding, or Waterproof Membranes), CSCS card, working at height certification.

Training Route

2-3 year apprenticeship is the standard route. Roofing is physically demanding and requires comfort with heights. College courses are available but the vast majority of learning happens on the job. Lead work is a specialist area with its own qualifications.

A Day in the Life

Set up scaffolding access and safety equipment. Strip old tiles or felt. Repair or replace battens and felt. Lay tiles, slates, or sheet roofing. Fit ridge tiles, valleys, and flashings. Lead work around chimneys. Work stops in heavy rain or high winds.
