How to Become a Gas Engineer in the UK
Everything you need to know about starting a career as a gas engineer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.
Average Salary
Self-employed gas engineers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.
Qualifications You Need
ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualifications, Gas Safe registration (legally required), Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering. Often CCN1, CKR1, CENWAT, CPA1 modules.
Training Route
Typically 1-2 years of intensive training after completing plumbing qualifications, or a direct gas engineering course. The ACS assessments are notoriously tough and must be renewed every 5 years. Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement - working on gas without it is a criminal offence.
A Day in the Life
Service and repair boilers. Install new boilers and heating systems. Carry out landlord gas safety checks. Diagnose faults using flue gas analysers. Issue certificates. Emergency call-outs for gas leaks. The work is well-paid but carries serious responsibility - mistakes can be fatal.
