How to Become a Plasterer in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a plasterer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£26,000 - 38,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed plasterers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plastering (Solid or Fibrous), CSCS card. Some plasterers also train in dry lining.

Training Route

2-3 year apprenticeship or short intensive course (2-4 weeks for basics, but mastery takes years). College courses cover skimming, rendering, dry lining, and decorative plasterwork. The skill ceiling is high - speed and finish quality come only with thousands of hours of practice.

A Day in the Life

Sheet up and prep surfaces. PVA or bond coat walls. Mix and apply multi-finish plaster in two coats. Flatten and polish to a smooth finish before it sets. Work fast - plaster has a limited working time. Rendering exterior walls involves different materials and techniques.
