How to Become a Plumber in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a plumber — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£28,000 - 42,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed plumbers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 or 3 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing & Heating, City & Guilds 6035 or 6189, CSCS card for site work, optional Gas Safe registration (separate qualification).

Training Route

2-4 year apprenticeship or intensive fast-track course (16-25 weeks) at a specialist training centre. Apprenticeships combine college and on-site work. Fast-track suits career changers but you still need supervised site hours to build competence.

A Day in the Life

Morning call-outs for leaks and boiler issues. Fit bathrooms and kitchens. Run copper, plastic, and push-fit pipework. Install radiators and towel rails. Pressure test systems. Quote for new jobs in the afternoon. Emergency call-outs can extend the day.
