How to Become a Bricklayer in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a bricklayer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£26,000 - 42,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed bricklayers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations, CSCS card. Often learned entirely on the job or through apprenticeship.

Training Route

2-3 year apprenticeship is the most common route. College courses in bricklaying are available at most FE colleges. Many bricklayers learn informally by working alongside experienced brickies, though formal qualifications are increasingly required for larger contracts.

A Day in the Life

Start early on site. Mix mortar and set out profiles and string lines. Lay bricks or blocks to courses, checking levels constantly. Build walls, extensions, chimney stacks, and decorative features. Work in all weathers. Piece-work rates mean faster bricklayers earn significantly more.
