How to Become a Scaffolder in the UK

Self-employed scaffolders often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.
Qualifications You Need
CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) card - Part 1 and Part 2, CSCS card, working at height training.
Training Route
CISRS Part 1 (Trainee Scaffolder) requires 6 months of site experience plus a 2-week assessment. Part 2 (Scaffolder) requires 12+ months experience plus another assessment. Advanced Scaffolder is the highest level. Physical fitness is essential - this is one of the most demanding trades.
A Day in the Life
Load tubes, fittings, and boards onto vehicles. Erect scaffolding from ground level up, following a scaffold design. Tie in to the building. Install toe boards, guardrails, and brick guards. Inspect existing scaffolds weekly. Dismantle (strike) scaffolds. Hard physical work in all weathers.
