How to Become a Landscape Gardener in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a landscape gardener — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£22,000 - 36,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed landscape gardeners often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 or 3 in Horticulture or Landscaping, PA1/PA6 pesticide certificates, optional LANTRA awards for machinery. No mandatory registration but BALI membership adds credibility.

Training Route

College courses in horticulture or landscaping last 1-2 years. Apprenticeships available. Many landscape gardeners are self-taught or learn on the job. The work combines horticultural knowledge with hard landscaping skills (paving, decking, fencing, walls). Running your own business is the most common path.

A Day in the Life

Design and build garden transformations. Lay patios and paths using natural stone or porcelain. Build retaining walls. Install decking and pergolas. Plant borders, trees, and hedging. Lay turf or seed lawns. Maintain existing gardens. The work is seasonal - summers are intense, winters are quieter.
