How to Become a Kitchen Fitter in the UK

Self-employed kitchen fitters often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

No mandatory qualifications but Level 2 NVQ in Kitchen Fitting or Carpentry is typical. Many kitchen fitters come from a carpentry background. Part P electrical competence useful for minor electrical work.

Training Route

Most kitchen fitters learn through carpentry apprenticeships and then specialise, or learn on the job with an established fitter. Some training providers offer short kitchen fitting courses. The key skills are precision measurement, scribing, working with flat-pack and bespoke units, and worktop joining.

A Day in the Life

Strip out old kitchen. Check walls for level and square - they never are. Fix any issues. Install base units, wall units, and tall units. Cut and join worktops (mitre joints on laminate, templating for stone). Fit sinks, taps, and appliances. Scribe end panels and plinths. Tile splashbacks.
