How to Become a Heating Engineer in the UK

Self-employed heating engineers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 3 NVQ in Plumbing & Heating, Unvented Hot Water qualification (G3), optional renewable energy certifications (MCS for heat pumps), CSCS card.

Training Route

Usually an extension of plumbing qualifications. 3-4 years including plumbing apprenticeship plus specialist heating modules. The industry is moving towards heat pumps and renewables, so training in these technologies is increasingly valuable.

A Day in the Life

Install and commission heating systems - radiators, underfloor heating, boilers, cylinders. Balance radiator systems. Fit smart thermostats and controls. Increasingly installing air source heat pumps. Power flush existing systems. A mix of new installs and maintenance work.
