How to Become a Glazier in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a glazier — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£25,000 - 37,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed glaziers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Glazing, CSCS card, FENSA registration for window installation (building regulations compliance).

Training Route

2-3 year apprenticeship or specialist glazing course. Window fitters often learn on the job with established companies. FENSA registration allows you to self-certify installations without involving building control. Double glazing installation is the bread and butter but specialist glazing (structural, fire-rated, decorative) pays more.

A Day in the Life

Remove old windows and doors. Prepare openings - check levels and square. Fit new uPVC, aluminium, or timber windows. Plumb and pack frames. Seal with expanding foam and silicone. Fit glass units. Install composite or bifold doors. Measure for new orders.
