How to Become a Flooring Installer in the UK

Everything you need to know about starting a career as a flooring installer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.

Average Salary

£24,000 - 38,000
per year (UK average, 2026)

Self-employed flooring installers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.

Qualifications You Need

Level 2 NVQ in Flooring (not mandatory but recommended), CSCS card for commercial work. NICF (National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers) membership adds credibility.

Training Route

Apprenticeships or on-the-job training with an experienced fitter. College courses available. The range of flooring types means continuous learning - carpet, vinyl, LVT, laminate, engineered wood, natural stone, resin. Subfloor preparation is where most of the skill lies.

A Day in the Life

Survey and measure rooms. Prepare subfloors - levelling compound, DPM, plywood overlay. Acclimatise materials. Cut and lay flooring - each type has different techniques. Carpet requires stretching and gripper rods. LVT needs precise cutting. Engineered wood needs expansion gaps. Fit profiles and trims.
