How to Become a Fence Installer in the UK
Everything you need to know about starting a career as a fence installer — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.
Average Salary
Self-employed fence installers often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.
Qualifications You Need
No mandatory qualifications. LANTRA awards available. Chainsaw certification (if clearing) and manual handling training useful. CSCS card for commercial fencing.
Training Route
Most fence installers learn on the job. Short courses in fencing are available through LANTRA. The work is physically demanding but relatively straightforward to learn. Specialising in security fencing, agricultural fencing, or acoustic fencing can increase earnings.
A Day in the Life
Mark out fence line using string and spray paint. Dig post holes by hand or with a post auger/excavator. Set posts in concrete or drive them in with a post driver. Fit gravel boards, panels, rails, or pales. Install gates and hardware. Remove old fencing and dispose of waste. Work in all weathers.
