Everything you need to know about starting a career as a bathroom fitter — qualifications, training routes, what you will actually earn, and the tools you need to get started.
Average Salary
Self-employed bathroom fitters often earn more, especially in London and the South East. Experienced specialists can exceed the upper range significantly.
Qualifications You Need
Combination of plumbing, tiling, and carpentry skills. Level 2 NVQ in Plumbing plus tiling experience. Part P awareness for electrical work near water. Unvented hot water (G3) useful.
Training Route
Bathroom fitting is a multi-trade role. Most bathroom fitters started in plumbing or tiling and expanded their skills. There is no single bathroom fitting qualification - it requires competence across plumbing, tiling, carpentry, basic electrics, and plastering. This versatility commands premium rates.
A Day in the Life
Strip out old bathroom. First fix plumbing - reposition waste and supply pipes. Board out with moisture-resistant board. Tank shower areas with liquid membrane. Tile walls and floor. Second fix plumbing - fit bath, basin, toilet, shower. Silicone seal everything. Fit accessories.
